Howler

Our meticulously crafted espresso blend performs beautifully in milk drinks while standing confidently on its own.

Quantity

Howler is the blend behind most of what comes off our espresso bar, built to hold its own against milk and syrup without disappearing into it. We roast it medium-dark, stopping deliberately short of dark, because a little acidity in an espresso keeps it interesting. The base is Central and South American coffee chosen for chocolate and body, with a fruit-forward component layered in for lift. Expect almond butter and dark chocolate up front with red grape through the finish. Pulled as a solo shot it's balanced and heavy. With steamed milk it goes creamy and sweet, which is where most people meet it.

  • Do I need an espresso machine to drink this?

No. Howler was built for the espresso bar, but it's a great filter coffee. Brewed as drip or pour over it's bold and heavy and sweet. The espresso design just means it's been tuned to hold its own against milk and syrup, which also makes it a sturdy cup on its own.

How do I dial it in?

Start at 20 grams in, 40 grams out, around 27 seconds. That's where it's been landing best. Anywhere from 24 to 31 seconds will give you a drinkable shot, but 27 to 28 is the sweet spot. If your shots taste sharp, pull a second or two longer.

Is this what you serve in the cafes?

Yes. Howler is the base of most of what comes off our espresso bar, so it's what most people have actually tasted at Frothy Monkey whether they knew the name or not.

    Will it taste bitter?

It's medium-dark, not dark. We deliberately don't roast it all the way down, because a little acidity in an espresso is exciting and it disappears entirely if you take the roast too far. Expect almond butter and dark chocolate with some fruit behind it rather than char.

What's the difference between Howler and 12South?

Howler is darker, heavier, and built to cut through milk. 12South is lighter, brighter, and built to be drunk black or with a splash. If you make lattes at home, Howler. If you make drip, 12South.

Red grape? In an espresso blend?

That fruit character comes from a natural process component, meaning coffee dried with the fruit still on the bean. How forward it reads depends on what's in the blend that month. Some batches lean juicy and grape-like, some lean more toward the chocolate and almond side. Both are Howler.

    Does the blend change?

Regularly. Howler is usually two or three coffees from Central and South America with a fruit-forward component layered in, and the specific coffees rotate with what's available and what's tasting best. Our roaster keeps tight margins on the roast so the shot stays where you expect it.

    Is it good in milk?

It was designed for it. With steamed milk it goes creamy and sweet, which is exactly what you want in a cappuccino or a latte.

We have been using Howler coffee beans for around 3 years. This year we moved about an hour away to our closest location and decided to put it on a subscription. We love how easy it is and the savings, plus the rewards! However the last few bags, we believe have been roasted differently. Even the scent of the beans has changed.

Hey Lourdes, thanks for being a long-time Howler fan. We work hard to keep our roasts consistent batch to batch, so this feedback really helps.

I'll pass it along to our roasters to look into, and we'll follow up with you directly. Thank you!

I love ‘Howler’! I started with 12 south, when trying out Frothy Monkey, but the Howler is amazing!

Hey Alicia, Howler and 12South makes a great pair. Thanks for giving both a try!

Awesome coffee - tried many specialty roasters and frothy always remains my favorite. Flavor is consistent, rich, and balanced. It always pulls so consistently on espresso. Very repeatable and interacts really well with milk in a latte as well. Only hard part here is not drinking too much at once! Keep up the good work you are really brightening a lot of peoples day!

Hey James, consistent, rich, and balanced. That's exactly what we're going for with Howler. Thank you for the note.

I love 12 south! Howler was just as good! Not quite as smooth as 12 south but with more flavor! I love them both!

Hey BT, 12South and Howler is a strong rotation to have. Thanks so much!

Davis M.

The value to quality ratio here is great with the first time discount and free shipping for 3 bags (I got 36 oz of beans for 43 bucks, on par with local Texas roasters). And as a Nashville native transplanted elsewhere, it’s nice that I can get it shipped. The beans I got appeared to have been roasted the day they were shipped, and for an espresso enthusiast who wants the freshest beans so I can let them off-gas on my time, this is always a concern about this when ordering online, and a huge relief receive this fresh. Pulls a consistently tasty shot. Will definitely buy again.

Hey Davis, thanks so much for the thoughtful write-up and for letting us into your morning routine from Texas. Freshness matters to us too, so we're stoked it showed up right. Appreciate you making the trip back via a bag of Howler.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Your coffee ships fresh. We roast throughout the week and pack orders as they come in to ensure you're getting beans at their peak.

    • Orders placed Monday–Thursday before 2pm CST ship the next business day.
    • Orders placed Monday–Thursday after 2pm CST ship within two business days.
    • Orders placed Friday–Sunday are packed on Monday and ship within 1-2 business days.

During holidays and promotional periods, please allow 2-3 additional business days for processing and shipping.
  • We offer four grind options to match how you're brewing:

    • Drip / Pour-Over — Works for automatic drip machines, pour-over brewers (V60, Kalita, Chemex), and AeroPress. This is the most versatile grind and covers most home brewing methods.
    • Fine (Espresso) — Ground specifically for espresso machines. It's very fine, which means it'll over-extract and taste bitter or chalky if you use it in drip or pour-over methods. Only use this if you're pulling shots.
    • French Press — Coarser grind for traditional French Press brewing, cold brew, or large-batch Chemex (60+ grams of coffee). The larger grind size prevents over-extraction during longer steep times.
    • Cold Brew — Coarse grind optimized for cold brew methods with extended steeping (12-24 hours). Similar to French Press but dialed in for cold water extraction.

Not sure? Drip / Pour-Over is your safest bet if you're brewing with anything other than an espresso machine or doing cold brew.

  • Coffee brewing sits somewhere between science and personal preference. There's no single "right" way, just the way that works for you.

We've put together brew guides for:

    • Chemex
    • Kalita Wave 185
    • French Press
    • Auto-Drip Brewer
    • Cold Brew
    • Single-Serve

      Visit our brewing page here.

Each guide covers ratios, grind size, and timing. These technical foundations help you dial in your perfect coffee. From there, it's yours to adjust. A little more coffee for boldness, a slightly coarser grind for clarity, water temperature shifts for sweetness or brightness. The variables matter, but so does what you actually enjoy drinking.

Start with a guide that matches your equipment, brew a few rounds, and notice what changes when you tweak one thing at a time. That's how you find your version.
  • We offer signature and single-origin coffees that range from light to dark roast, each crafted to highlight different flavor profiles and brewing methods.

    • 12South — Our most versatile medium roast. Works beautifully as drip, cold brew, or espresso.
    • Brunch — A vibrant light roast breakfast blend. Perfect for pour-over or drip.
    • Brute — Bold, creamy, and comforting. A darker roast best brewed in a French press.
    • Howler — Our espresso blend. Medium roast that shines in milk drinks but stands strong on its own.
    • Eventide Decaf — Full-bodied, dark-roasted decaf. Decaffeinated with the sugarcane method. Perfect for evenings.
    • Midshift Half Caff — Half the caffeine, full flavor. Balanced medium roast that works any time of day.
    • Frothy Cold Brew — Developed for cold extraction but versatile across methods. Naturally sweet.
    • Single-Origin Coffees - Our rotating selection showcases beans from specific farms and regions. Selections change seasonally based on harvest and availability.
