Flash Chilled Iced Coffee

Hot coffee poured straight over ice sounds like a mistake, but it's the fastest way to a cup that actually tastes like the coffee. Brewing hot pulls out the strawberry, lime, and fudge in Slip & Slide, and crashing it over ice locks those flavors in before they have a chance to fade. That's the whole idea behind flash chilled iced coffee. You get the brightness of a hot brew and the temperature of a cold one, in about eight minutes. Pour it, stir it, take it outside.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Add 30g of medium-coarse ground Slip & Slide Summer Blend to your French press.
  2. Pour in 300g of hot water and start a timer for 4 minutes.
  3. At 4:00, stir the slurry for 10 seconds.
  4. Immediately pour the coffee through a paper filter into a separate container. No filter on hand? Just press and pour the brewed coffee into another container.
  5. Add 150g of ice to the brewed coffee and stir until the ice melts and the outside of the container frosts over.
  6. Drink it as is for a strong, fruit-forward cup, or pour it over 50g of fresh ice for a colder, more refreshing one.

Barista Tips

What is flash chilled coffee?

It's coffee brewed hot, then chilled immediately over ice. The hot water pulls out the acidity and fruit that cold water leaves behind, and the ice locks the cup in before those flavors start to dull. Cold brew is smoother and rounder. Flash chilled is brighter and tastes more like the coffee itself.

Why pour it through a filter after pressing?

A French press lets fine grounds through, and those grounds keep extracting while the coffee sits. Running it through a paper filter catches them, which keeps the cup clean and stops it from turning bitter as it chills. If you don't have a filter, just move the coffee out of the press into another container so it stops brewing on the grounds.

Can I use a different coffee?

You can, but a light roast is what makes this method worth it. Slip & Slide is roasted light and leans strawberry, lime, and fudge, so the fruit really shows up when you pour it over ice. A dark roast will come through flatter and more bitter.

Slip & Slide Summer Blend$25.00

Our summer blend, built for exactly this. A washed Ethiopian from Wenago keeps it tangy and clean, a Colombian natural brings the strawberry and fudge, and an anaerobic natural Rwandan Bourbon rounds it out creamy. We roasted it light so the fruit stays loud over ice.
