Fortune Cookie Latte

Buttery, slightly sweet, faintly almond. The Fortune Cookie Latte tastes like the cookie it's named for, just warmer and creamier. Vanilla syrup builds the base, a small dropper of almond extract carries the cookie note, and our Howler espresso adds enough almond butter and dark chocolate depth to keep it from getting one-dimensional. Steamed milk smooths everything out. A fortune cookie balanced on the lip of the cup is the part where the drink stops feeling like a latte and starts feeling like dessert. Make it at home in five minutes.

A latte with heart-shaped latte art in a white ceramic mug, garnished with a yellow fortune cookie whose paper fortune reads "Appreciate coffee; it's a source of solace and inspiration."

Preparation

  1. Portion the vanilla syrup into the bottom of the cup.
  2. Use the dropper to measure the almond extract over the syrup.
  3. Pull 2 shots of Frothy Monkey Howler Espresso directly over the syrup, then stir vigorously to combine.
  4. Pour your milk of choice into a steaming pitcher.
  5. Steam the milk to 150 to 155°F with a wet, glossy texture.
  6. Pour the steamed milk over the espresso and syrup mixture.
  7. Garnish with a fortune cookie balanced on the lip of the cup, or set it on the saucer.

Barista Tips

How much almond extract should I actually use?
Tiny amounts. We use 0.25 ml for an 8oz, 0.5 ml for a 12oz, and 1 ml for a 16oz. Almond extract is concentrated, so a heavy hand turns the drink medicinal fast. A dropper like the one on Angel Bake's 2oz bottle makes these small pours easy.

What milk works best?
Whole dairy gives the closest match to a real fortune cookie's buttery richness. Oat milk works well too if you want something dairy-free, since it keeps the body creamy without dulling the almond note. Skim or 2% will feel thin against the syrup.

Can I use a different Frothy Monkey blend instead of Howler
Yes. Howler is what we recommend because its almond butter and dark chocolate notes reinforce the cookie flavor, but 12South works too if you want a milder, sweeter base. Skip Brunch and Brute here. Brunch is too bright and citrusy for a dessert profile, and Brute leans too dark.

Howler$18.00

Howler is our medium-dark espresso blend with almond butter, dark chocolate, and red grape notes. It's a natural match for the Fortune Cookie Latte because the almond butter character reinforces the almond extract, and the chocolate depth keeps the drink from feeling flat. Pulls great as straight espresso, too.

Our Vanilla Coffee Syrup is made with real vanilla, not the flat artificial stuff. In the Fortune Cookie Latte it builds the buttery base note that almond extract sits on top of. This is the same syrup our baristas use across every Frothy Monkey cafe location.
